Parents, there one scene of graphic sex and some language. There are lots of crotch shots though. Recommended for ages 17 and up.

“Sex & The City 2" is - far as I can tell - an abomination on film making. A catastrophe. Ranking as low a failure as “Batman & Robin,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” and “Howard the Duck.” This is what happens when you give a television crew way to much money to play with: They spend it all frivolously on things they have no Earthly right spending it on. I re-watched the original film before I went to see this movie. That movie I gave two and a half stars, half a star shy from a mild recommendation. The movie was much better then I expected it to be and the charm was there, I just felt it was too long with one storyline too many.

Still, with a little more focus I was optimistic a sequel would be worth recommending. No such luck. The movie opens at the gay wedding of Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) best friend Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson). There she meets up with all her friends and catches up with what’s going on. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is taking many pills to try and outrun metaphase. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is having trouble being a mom, complaining that her kids are ruining her vintage clothes. Finally Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is having more marriage problems because she’s dedicated to a job that doesn’t appreciate her and she’s missing out on her sons life as a result.

What about Carrie? Well even though she’s married to Big (Chris Noth) who is a perfect man, goes out with her almost every night, and even buys her a high definition TV so that the two of them can watch black & white movies together, she complains that she’s getting bored of the marriage. At one point she asks him if she’s feeling this way because she’s a spoiled bitch. I think I said “yes” a little too loudly, which resulted in someone throwing a bag of popcorn at me, at which point I decided to shut up and keep my opinions to myself.

Now all this would not be a bad setup because...well, let’s face it, the trials and tribulations of these women are what most likely made the series popular in the first place. I’m not even sure if telling you all this back story was even necessary, because twenty minutes into the movie the girls all pack their bags and fly out to Abu Dhabi on an all expenses paid trip. Though the movie explains how a trip that looks like it costs $100 million dollars is complimentary to these women...I’m just not buying it. It seems more like the film makers received enough money to actually make a big budget film and just decided to fly around the world.

Why? Well, because you’ve got to spend this money somehow right? Again, this wouldn’t be a problem if something - ANYTHING - interesting happened in Abu Dhabi! But this isn’t New York City. Abu Dhabi has no personality. For that matter, all the women’s problems are at home...which is where they should be if they want to fix any of them. But no, these dumb women...these stupid, irresponsible, moronic women just seem to set out to create problems for themselves (and by extension the audience). Most noticeably Samantha, who is hormone crazy and offends the Arab’s in all the worst ways possible because she has to cover up her breasts and thighs.

This air head bimbo can’t figure out there is such a thing as culture clash and creates far more problems for her friends then they have any right to put up with. Not that the other women are any better. Carrie runs into an old flame in the store market (Aiden, played by John Corbett) and rather then walk the other way decides to go out to dinner with him. Because she’s married and...never mind, I forgot these characters were stupid. I would go on but I think I have a paragraph limit here. The bottom line is more money went into this production and it seems that’s where the effort went: Into the look and not the heart.

The script is so dumb it’s hard to believe the actors signed on to be in this. So much time was spent on going overseas, to a big Hollywood premier, to a big gay wedding that only Steve Jobs could afford, yet no one paused to realize no one really cares about this stuff. They care about the characters, the witty dialog, and the humanity of these people. There are dashes of this near the end, but by then I had one foot out the door. Yes, I finished the movie, but at over two and a half hours I think pulling out the TV show and watching five to six episodes would be more worth your time. This is just over budgeted crap that is an insult to intelligence.
